Alleviating Dental Anxiety

Helping Nervous Kids Overcome Dental Fear

Is Your Child Afraid of the Dentist?

Many children are fearful about going to the dentist. Our specially trained pediatric dentists at Broad Smiles Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics have extensive experience working with children with dental anxiety. We focus on creating a calm, friendly environment where nervous kids can feel at ease. We help children overcome their fears and develop a positive attitude toward dental visits through gentle care and sedation dentistry when necessary. Every visit should be a good experience for your child.

  • How do you help kids who are afraid of the dentist?

We’re parents, too. We know that patience and understanding are vital for helping kids work through big feelings. Our specially trained pediatric dentists are well-equipped to help your child with dental anxiety. Dental anxiety in kids can stem from various factors, including fear of the unknown, previous negative experiences, or general anxiety disorders. Understanding the root cause of your child’s fear helps us tailor our approach to meet their needs. Our team uses various techniques to help kids with anxiety, including desensitization, where we gradually introduce children to the dental environment and procedures to help them feel comfortable. During their visit, we use praise and rewards to encourage brave behavior and offer distractions like toys, books, and videos.

  • What sedation options are available for children with severe dental anxiety?

For children with severe dental anxiety, we offer sedation options that are safe and effective. Our practice provides sedation services tailored to each child’s needs, ensuring a stress-free experience.

    • Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas) is a mild sedative that helps children relax during procedures. Nitrous oxide is currently offered at our Salem office and will soon be available at our Lynnfield location.
    • In our Salem office, an anesthesiologist can come to the office and administer general anesthesia. Once the patient is asleep, Dr. Park completes the dental procedure. This service will soon be available at our Lynnfield office as well.
    • For medically complex cases or if parents prefer a hospital setting, our dentists will go to the hospital to perform procedures while the patient is under anesthesia.
